MobileMe is the updated version of Apple’s .Mac service – a website hosting service, hard drive, and organizer wrapped in one silky smooth web-based application. When I found out it worked with iPhone, MobileMe became an absolute must have because I’m extremely disorganized. Here’s why…
1. Contacts. I’ve got several contact lists I use regularly. A few of them are Gmail, Address Book and all the contacts in my iPhone – They’re never in sync because I don’t plug my iPhone into my Mac so I don’t have a clue who’s in which list. Now, (finally) I can get organized with instantly updated contact lists for all 3 – Address Book, iPhone and in the MobileMe Cloud.
2. Email. I love Gmail but, having one central email account at @me.com with spam & virus protection, friendly interfaces no matter which device I’m using and toss in the fact that it’s advertising free – I may never use Gmail again.
3. Calendar. Using iCal on my Mac is awesome, but my events tend to be rather wordy. I like to add lots of information about directions with links to Google Maps, what’s required, who I’m meeting, etc – and that’s too much to type on the iPhone, especially at work (my iPhone is for personal use only). Now I’ll be able to pop open the MobileMe calendar on my PC at work, and type everything I need on a full-sized keyboard. Plus, it will be instantly sent to my iPhone – brilliant!
4. iDisk. I must be the only person on the planet without a portable, keychain, USB hard drive because I don’t want another “thing” to take with me everywhere. In fact, I want less “things” to carry and that’s why the iDisk in MobileMe is perfect. I can grab any files I need at work and send them up to the iDisk – even on the PC. Then, I can come home, download the files and begin editing them on my Mac. Send the files back up to iDisk when I’m done and I know they’ll be waiting when I head back to work in the morning – and I don’t have to worry about remembering a USB drive or burning a CD.
5. Confidence & Relaxation. Knowing all of my data is safe, organized and constantly updated, I can stop worrying about missing an appointment or email and just… chill… man… and focus on other things on my to-do list. In fact, maybe I’ll take a walk to the beach and meditate for a while. Peace…
MobileMe will be released in July, but you can pre-order now at Store.Apple.com. MobileMe is $99 per year for one account or $149 per year for a 5 user family account.
