iPhone Update 1.1.3 + Gmail

prod-iphone.jpgThe iPhone update 1.1.3 had a surprise tucked away inside that I hadn’t heard about pre-launch. If you use Gmail on your iPhone (good move!), you’ll notice that your Gmail “labels” are now visible on iPhone!

Is this earth shattering news? No, but it’s so damn cool!

Just click the Mail icon, select Gmail and POW! Right there, below the standard Inbox, Drafts, Sent Mail and Trash, are all your Gmail Labels! Plus, you can check your Gmail that is “starred” and Spam. Holla!

Why all this functionality with Gmail? It seems Steve Jobs really, really likes Google. He mentioned that today in the Macworld Keynote.

Not only is Google THE leader in search, they’re a competitor of Microsoft & MSN. Who better for Apple to partner with?

Even if all the rumors are true about Microsoft buying Yahoo, Apple & Google are still hooked up for the long haul and poised to crush Yahoo, MSN and possibly Microsoft. – Doh!

Yes, you are able to view the labels (don’t get me wrong, this definitely is great) but you are still unable to assign labels to messages. Once that feature is supported, either in the iPhone’s built in Mail software, or through mobile Gmail, then I will start to check my Gmail more from my phone. Currently, it’s great for checking on old emails, but not being able to organize new ones is a turn off.

I agree totally. Labels in Gmail are wonderful to keep incoming messages (with filters) organized. Hopefully Apple will learn from Gmail and apply labels & conversations to the .Mac / MobileMe accounts. Then I’d be in heaven!
